For too long, women have based their understanding of menstruation off a series of Chinese whispers. Well we’re here to crack these myths wide open, once and for all!

Contrary to popular belief, exercising during menstruation is good for you! Keeping active will help to release serotonin and endorphins, uplifting your mood and energy levels. Try stretches, pilates or yoga to target the areas that might get sore due to cramping. You should also make sure you get plenty of sleep, but no more than usual.

Myth 2 – You cannot get pregnant while on your period

False! Do not be mistaken ladies. You can definitely get pregnant on your period. There are no ifs or buts about this one. Sperm can live for 3-5 days inside you so it isn’t worth the risk. Always use protection!

Myth 3 – You should not wash your hair whilst on your period

Wash your hair whenever you want! In fact, you’ll probably feel a lot cleaner, fresher and more relaxed after a nice shower or bath.

Myth 4 – Your period will last exactly one week and menstrual cycles are exactly 28 days

This number is just an average figure. Menstrual cycles vary from woman to woman and the only way to know if yours is problematic is to see your doctor.

Myth 5 – PMS is all in your head

Have you ever been told that PMS isn’t real? Well, we have news for you. That person was spouting lies! They might not have known any better, but the facts are that your hormones cause symptoms like irritability, depression and fatigue. Those feelings are just as real as your physical cramps, and in no way deserving of less sympathy!

Myth 6 – You shouldn’t talk to your daughter about her period

Please, parents and caregivers. Talk to your kids about their bodies! You may think they can learn everything they need online or through the grape vine at school, but there’s only one sure way to get the facts straight. Young girls are more likely to get scared if nobody tells them what’s going on with their bodies, so at least start the discussion and make her feel safe talking to you about it.

Myth 7 – Swimming with your period will attract sharks

Nope! You’re at no more risk than anyone else on that beach. So go crazy & enjoy some sun!

Myth 8 – Irregular periods are always bad news

Some women have regular periods and some don’t. If you’re in the first year of having your period, it will probably become more regular as time goes on. If you’re ever unsure, it’s always best to see your doctor.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
